The most sought after commodity in this world is something that all people have. And every person has exactly the same amount. Can you guess what it is?
Time – we all have the exact same amount of time. How we spend that time is what set us apart from one another. If you spend too much time on one area of your life, you are neglecting another area, for example the father who is spending too much time at work and is never at home.
It is absolute foolishness too spend all your time on one aspect of your life. There are of course seasons in our lives. For instance, a mom with a baby will spend more time with her child than the mom who has a son in high school – that is common sense. It is always good to learn new things, but a student in university will inevitably spend more time studying and learning than a middle aged man. In other words how we spend our time is influenced by many factors of our lives. But if we prioritize correctly we have a better chance of spending our time wisely.
What is the use if you are rich but spiritually poor? Or how is it good if you are successful in business but you marriage is in dire straits? The fact of the matter is that our environment is forcing us to be unwise in our management of time. Let us start at the beginning. You need to spend time with the Person who created time. And don’t think a Sunday service is enough time to give to God. You should meet with God daily even if it is only for a few minutes. It is necessary to pray and read the Bible every day. He deserves some of your time. After all, He not only blessed you with time, breath and life, but He gave you His love on the cross. You should spend time and energy to get to know Him better.
It is of course important to spend time with your spouse as well. Your better half should always know that you love him or her. Don’t neglect your marriage – it never ends well. And then you should spend time with your children. Create opportunities where you can have good interaction with your kids. Playing board games like Monopoly and card games like Uno is always a great idea. It is good to also set time aside for other family members and friends – people who are precious to you.
And yes, you have to allocate time for work as well. When you work, do it as best you can. And of course there is a place for working overtime, but it should never steal time from your relationship with God or your family.
Lastly, you should spend time on yourself. Do something that you like, something that recharges your batteries like fishing or watching rugby. Maybe you prefer a good book or just walking the dog.
When we spend our time wisely, we will experience success in all areas of our lives. You and I, dear reader, have God given responsibility to manage our time right.
Look carefully then how you walk! Live purposefully and worthily and accurately, not as the unwise and witless, but as wise (sensible, intelligent people), making the very most of the time [buying up each opportunity], because the days are evil. – Ephesians 5:15-16 (AMP)
