You are loved

Deep in your heart of hearts, do you believe that Jesus really loves you? Is it difficult to trust that the God who created heaven and earth cares about YOU?

If that describes you, you are not alone. Most of us struggle with the idea that God loves us unconditionally. I mean, not earning God’s love is a strange concept, isn’t it? I think it is because we try to understand His infinite love through our human experience. And the way we humans love are far inferior to God’s love.

Our relationships with our fellow human beings are built on conditions. We view love through terms like “if”, “when” or “because”. If you do this for me, I will love you. When you say sorry I mightforgive you. Because you did this, I love you. It’s all conditional.

So it is no wonder we struggle to grasp that unconditional love even exists. God not only wants us to believe this, but He Himself loves us with an unconditional love.

God’s thoughts and intentions concerning you is to bless you and it is always aimed at your wellbeing (Jeremiah 29:11, James 1:17). God is in your corner. He is always on your side. He is for you and never against you. It does not matter how crazy the world is around you, He has the best in store for you. Trust in His unwavering love. Even though God is holy and almighty, He’s waiting for you with arms open wide. He wants to be your friend. He is kind and friendly towards us even when we are sometimes undeserving of it.

He knows what we are facing and knows the turmoil in our hearts. He is not only aware of our pain but He understands sorrow and has empathy. The Holy Spirit is also called the Comforter, because He comforts us no matter what we are facing. Jesus cried when Lazarus died. God is not a statue with a heart of stone – not in the least. When we cry, He is crying with us. When we are laughing, He is laughing as well.

In my own life I sometimes fall for the lie that God loves me more when I’m doing something right. Sometimes I think God loves me more because I’m reading the Bible a little more than usual or maybe I prayed half an hour instead of only fifteen minutes. It is a lie straight from the pits of hell. God’s love is never earned. God’s love is unchanging whether I’m a good Christian or a bad one. Of course there are advantages and disadvantages to our behaviour but it does not change God’s love for us.

Die Bible says in Zephaniah 3:17 that God sings over His people. He rejoices over us! We were made for His pleasure.

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  – Romans 5:8

God didn’t let His Son die on the Cross for holy people, but for me and you – yes, YOU. This is how we know that Jesus loves us: He paid the price to set us free from the consequences of sin – hell. God’s love is greater than any of your weaknesses. His love is true and forever. His love is unconditional and free.

Stop trying to earn His love. Let us live holy lives and be faithful to Him – not because we try to be deserving of His love, but because we ARE loved.
