I am 45 years old going on 85… Well some days it sure feels that way, but in reality there are other days when I feel much younger. I believe it has to do with hope. I’ve noticed that when I have a positive expectancy I seem to feel like a teenage boy just before I doing something exciting with my friends. But a lot of days I expect things to go wrong. I, just like most people of my age, tend to worry about life – stuff like crime, politics and money. But when I was a boy I never thought about any of those things. I hoped for a good life, and of course a hope for a special someone. I hoped that my life would be significant and meaningful.
I personally believe that God made us to have hope – to have an expectancy of good things to come. Unfortunately we humans tend to focus on the negative in life. We seem to think that bad things are inevitable and if something good happens it must be luck. “That friend of mine has a good marriage – he was really lucky to find a great wife.” So because we notice the bad and not the good, hope goes out the back door. We worry and stress about stuff that usually don’t even realise. Now it is true that life will throw you a curve ball every now and then but as Christians we know that even the worst of things will not destroy us. You see dear reader we have a God that loves us and are able to help us in our time of trouble.
But our Heavenly Father does not only react when we are in need. As matter of fact He says in His Word that He has a definite plan for all of us: “Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:16). This should give you hope – a hope that is positive because God has only the best in store for us. “But, as it is written, ‘What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him.’” – 2 Corinthians 2:9
This hope should encourage and strengthen us as His dear children. We are to be without negative stress and worries. Not because everything is okay in our country… on the contrary! We have hope because we know this broken world with all its crime and diseases and corrupt governments are only temporary. There is a future when all this is done – a future that will exceed your wildest dreams; a future where no suffering will get the upper hand. There will be no more bad neighbours or dishonest politicians. We will experience absolute peace and well-being.
Heaven is your future and destiny if you are a child of God. That is the greatest hope ever. It is our hope.
