Do you have a desire to be more holy in this chaotic world? Would you rather be more godly but the world has a pull on you? You are not alone – all Christians struggle with godliness. I personally think the answer to this is found in the first 2 verses of Psalm 1:
Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in His law doth he meditate day and night.
Verse 1 talks about taking advice from the ungodly while the second verse speaks about receiving advice from the Word of God. I believe most people lose in life because of following bad advice.
It seems like we tend to believe bad counsel and scoff at good guidance. But a godly person will always surround him/herself with people who give good and godly advice. If you want to live the life of a truly godly person, you have to make up your mind to surround yourself with people who are positive, God-fearing and wise. Choose to get rid of sinful influences. It is true that sometimes one has a good friend that is an unbeliever and that is OK. But he or she should not influence you to move away from God. Instead you should influence them towards God. But also get some friends that are serving the Lord, people who have a desire to become more holy. Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. (Proverbs 27:17)
I would also like to just say a word on what we consider to be entertainment. There is a lot of immoral entertainment today. If you are watching evil stuff on television or the internet, don’t be surprised that you struggle to be godly. Garbage in, garbage out. It is as simple as that. So sometimes we as Christians just cannot watch the same things others do.
The second part of that Scripture is to delight yourself in the Word of the Lord. I believe it is not so much about liking the Bible but rather to choose the Bible. And the more you choose the Bible the more you will enjoy reading the Bible. An old pastor always said that the Bible is like brandy: first you take it, then it takes you! Make a habit of reading your Bible daily and learn to remember and practice what you read. The more you read it the more you will think right. The more you think right the more you will act right. The answer to living a Godly life is hidden in the Bible.
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (Joshua 1:8)
Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to Thy Word.
Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path. (Psalm 119:105)
